Towns & Villages Around Kotor — Bay of Kotor Guide
Guide to towns and villages around Kotor: Perast, Dobrota, Muo, Prčanj, Stoliv, Risan, Tivat, Luštica, Orahovac, Morinj and more.
The short answer: which town should you choose?
If this is your first Kotor trip, use Kotor Old Town or Dobrota as your base and visit the villages as day trips. If you want romance, spend a night in Perast. If you want space, water views and fewer cruise-day crowds, look at Muo, Prčanj or Stoliv. If you want airport ease, modern restaurants and marina polish, choose Tivat.
The Bay of Kotor looks compact on a map, but the road winds around the water. A village that is only a few kilometres away across the bay can take 20–40 minutes by road, especially in summer traffic. That is why the right base matters.

Inner bay bases
The villages closest to Kotor.
These are the places most travellers should compare first because they keep Kotor within easy reach while changing the feel of the trip.

Best practical base
Dobrota
Dobrota stretches north from Kotor along the waterfront. It is calmer than Old Town, easier for swimming platforms and bay-view apartments, but still close enough for taxis, walks and dinners inside the walls.

Best for apartments
Muo
Muo sits across the water from Kotor, so the view back toward the fortress is the selling point. Choose it for terraces, kitchens and sunset light, not for walk-everywhere convenience.

Best slow village
Prčanj
Prčanj is one of the bay’s loveliest slow stays: old stone houses, a long waterfront, small churches and fewer day-trippers than Kotor. It works best if you have a car, bike or patience for taxis.
Postcard stops
The villages worth planning a day around.
Stoliv — quiet, green and better with time
Stoliv is quieter than Prčanj and feels more residential. It is best for travellers who want the bay without much nightlife: swimming ladders, old stone houses, cypress shade and a slower road around the water. It is not the easiest first-time base, but it is a good second-trip choice.
Perast — the prettiest village on the bay
Perast is the obvious beauty: Baroque palaces, a narrow waterfront, mountain reflections and the boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks. It is also more polished and expensive than the smaller villages, especially in peak season. Visit for half a day, or stay one night if you want the village after tour boats leave. See our Kotor to Perast guide for every way to get there — bus, taxi, boat or car.
Perast is best by boat if you are short on time
Most Bay of Kotor boat tours include Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks, which makes it the easiest village to add without renting a car.

Risan — old history without the postcard crowds
Risan is older, quieter and less polished than Perast. It is known for Roman mosaics and a more local rhythm, making it a good stop if you are driving the bay loop and want a break from the more photographed villages. Stay here only if you want quiet over convenience.
Tivat and Porto Montenegro — modern, easy and polished
Tivat is not as romantic as Perast or Kotor, but it is useful. The airport is close, Porto Montenegro gives you marina restaurants and polished hotels, and the town is easier for travellers who want modern infrastructure before or after a bay road trip.
Best village by traveller type
- First-timers: Kotor or Dobrota
- Couples: Perast or Prčanj
- Families: Dobrota or Tivat
- Drivers: Muo, Prčanj, Stoliv
- Luxury: Perast or Porto Montenegro
- Beaches: Luštica or Herceg Novi
Outer bay and beach extensions
When to go beyond the inner bay.

Beach extension
Herceg Novi
Herceg Novi sits near the mouth of the bay and works better as a separate coastal base than a quick Kotor side trip. Choose it for beaches, longer promenades and a more lived-in Adriatic feel.

Beach day
Luštica Peninsula
Luštica is where Kotor travellers go for beaches, caves and a more open Adriatic feeling. Žanjic, Mirište and Blue Cave trips make most sense by boat tour or rental car.

Road-trip logic
The bay loop
With a car, the best one-day route is Kotor → Dobrota → Perast → Risan → ferry crossing → Tivat → Prčanj/Muo → Kotor. Without a car, keep it to Kotor, Dobrota and Perast.
Want the bay loop without solving buses?
A rental car makes the villages easier, especially Stoliv, Luštica, Risan and Herceg Novi. If you only want Perast, book a boat tour instead.

Smaller places worth knowing
The quieter villages around the Bay of Kotor.
Once you move past the famous names, the bay becomes a chain of smaller waterfront places. Most are not full bases for a first Kotor trip, but they matter when you are choosing an apartment, planning a swim stop or deciding whether a rental car is worth it.
| Village | Where it fits | Why go | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orahovac | North of Dobrota, before Perast | A calmer waterfront, mountain views and a swim-stop feel without Perast prices. | Families, apartment stays, bay swims |
| Ljuta | Between Dobrota and Orahovac | A tiny stone-and-waterfront pocket that feels close to Kotor but quieter at night. | Quiet couples, scenic dinners, short stays |
| Morinj | Past Risan, toward the ferry side | A greener, more local-feeling bay stop with easy access to the Verige ferry route. | Drivers, longer bay loops, peaceful apartments |
| Kostanjica | Across the bay from Perast | Big Perast-and-islands views from the opposite shore, usually with fewer day-trippers. | View seekers, rental-car travellers |
| Kamenari | Ferry landing on the north side | Practical rather than romantic, but useful if your route crosses to Tivat or Luštica. | Road trips, ferry crossings |
| Lepetane | Ferry landing on the Tivat side | A convenient transit point that can shave time off a bay loop in summer traffic. | Drivers, Tivat connections |
Practical rule: stay in the smaller villages only if you have a car, a specific apartment you love, or a slow trip of four nights or more. For a first visit, Kotor, Dobrota, Perast and Tivat are still easier bases.
